The Matheran Valley Insititute of Excellence in Neral is run by the Bharat Education Society, Kurla. It is situated atop a panoramic and scenic hilltop in Neral and affords a magical view of the valley of Neral as well as the beauty of the Matheran peaks..Neral was chosen by The Bharat Education Society (Kurla)to start its first school outside Mumbai with a mission to ensure that all students receive a sound education, a firm cultural identity and become self-reliant and contributing members of their community and the world at large.

In this era of globalization and onset of knowl;edge based society, knowledge and innovation has become key ingredients for growth and progress of and individual. Therefore the focus of the education initiative in Matheran Valley Institute of Excellence is on developing pupils who could contribute to the “grey revolution” and promote entrepreneurial skills. The site of the school isa beautiful landscape of trees & rock formations and provides a large natural area for our students and future educational projects . The school in its desire to become a community center for the society caters to this lifelong learning process, making education process realistic,keeping in mind the present and future, to create logical, inventive and innovative minds and to provide platforms to students to demonstrate their talents

In anticipation of the societal need B.E.S (Kurla) has launched “Matheran Valley Institute of Excellence” with plans underway to enrich the lives of various age groups in the society through a variety of programme and courses offered by it. Management skills will be honed to make better leaders for the future. With over 32 acres of land, Bharat education Society is in the process of building a state –of- the- art interactive educational town for education, science, technology, pharmacy, law, mathematics, sports and the arts.Matheran Valley Institute of Excellence also believes that a sustainable vocational education and training is fundamental to the National education system in a fast progressing country. By the year 2020, to be the centre of excellence and Effective Educational transaction.

Educating with Purpose

The first phase includes the setting up School of education (B.Ed/ D.Ed) which aims to provide a learning experience in the field of Teacher Education through degree and other programmes resulting in quality teacher educators, educational administrators and researchers by adopting a carefully balanced curriculum embedded with innovative practices.The School will also seek to develop the knowledge, wisdom, and imagination of its students to enable them to take leadership positions in efforts to improve the quality of education around the globe. The conservation work at MatheranValley Institute of Education concentrates on the following areas: Water Conservation and rain water harvesting Reforesting barren hill slopes Soil and moisture conservation and wasteland development Use of alternative energy Employment opportunities for the locals

Inviting Visionaries

The Advisory Board is seeking ideas for future Educational Projects. As the Institute of Excellence is run by a charitable organization, funding opportunities for various educational Projects as well as conservation activities are available for those who would like to be involved in the project from the ground up. Naming opportunities for the construction and exhibit phases will be provided to interested stakeholders in the near or distant future. Bharat Education Society looks forward to evolve into an Autonomous University in years to come.

Humble Beginnings

Late. Shri K.B. Pillai

Bharat Education Society, Kurla had its humble beginnings in 1959, at the poorest and largest slum area of Mumbai (then Bombay) at Kurla. A group of likeminded Malayalees under the leadership of our founder patron Shri K.B. Pillai started Bharatiya Vidyalayam with help from general public, Two class rooms were rented out at Vazir house, which was situated at Halav Pool, near Masrani Lane, Kurla(w), Mumbai 400 070. The Bharatiya Vidyalayam was inaugurated by Shri V.K. Krishna Menon, the then Defence Minister of India, in 1959.

In year 1959 there were 41 students learning in the Malayalam, Tamil mediums as the organization at that time was meant for only South Indians. One of the objective of the trust was to impart quality education and at a reasonable fees. The other objectives were empowerment of the Malayalees children through education. In the subsequent years, 1960 and 1961, the student’s strength increased to 65 to 185 respectively. The first Annual General Body meeting was held in Nov 1960 at Holy Cross School. The space constraint was the biggest hurdle for development of school. The members of B.E.S. felt the need to change the medium of teaching language from Malayalam to English. On Vijayadashmi day of October, 1960, English medium was started. It began with 30 students.

Shri K.N. Venkatraman

Shri K.B. Pillai along with Shri K.N. Venketaraman had taken charge of ‘Bharatiya Vidyalayam’ housed in a small shed called ‘Vazir House’ in Kurla in the most backward slum areas of Kurla, where education was a dire necessity. Being Secretaries of the newly formed Bharat Education Society, Kurla, they were struggling to get students to join the newly started school and were also desperate in running of the school, financially. It is during their “hunt” for benevolent philanthropic malayalees in Mumbai (they “knocked on many a doors”, in vain) that they approached Shri G.P. Nair who thereafter became the President of Bharat Education Society and made the donation for the modern building for “Karthika”.

Late. Karthika P. Nair

In the year 1967, the then management of Bharat Education Society located at Kurla headed by Shri K.B. Pillai with strong support from Shri Venketaraman, desperately felt the need for a good school building to house an educational facility which was started by them in 1959. Shri G.P. Nair, husband of Late Karthika P. Nair and Managing Director of Bombay Drug House Pvt. Ltd. came forward with a handsome donation of Rs.1.5 Lakhs. This donation was instrumental in constructing the first modern RCC Building for Bharat Education Society. The school was renamed as Karthika High School.

Meet Our Staff

Late. Shri G.P. Nair

Shri G.P. Nair was the then President of Bharat Education Society as well as Managing Director of Bombay Drug House Pvt. Ltd. He was also the Treasurer of Bombay Regional Congress Committee and Past-President of IDMA. The new school building for “Karthika” was constructed at a newly purchased plot on Hall Road, Kurla and inaugurated in 1968.

Late. Shri Chinmayanandaji

Our Donor President Shri G.P. Nair expired in 1990. Soon thereafter, the Founder Secretary Shri K.B. Pillai also passed away. As per their wishes, Dr.Gopakumar G. Nair was made President. Under his leadership, Bharat Education Society began modernization and financial restructuring.
